The Best Time of the Year

Friend, we’re smack dab in the middle of the best time of the year, that period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Somehow, most everybody gets more mellow (unless they get too uptight about gifts and shopping)—and there’s a growing feeling of good will, nostalgia and memories of Christmas past, with loved ones and happy times.

Back in North Carolina, there’s a frail but incredibly brave elder statesman in a wheel chair, trying to make the most of these precious days without his first and only wife Ruth. Yes, he has most of his children and some of his grandkids around him, and lots of tender, loving care—but none of that can replace the company of that dear life companion of over 60 years.

Still, Billy Graham soldiers on, even through the celebration of his 90th birthday, using every opportunity to praise his God and point people to Jesus. What an amazing man!

May I make a suggestion, one I hope won’t be taken wrongly by anybody? As a Christmas gift to Billy, and to families and friends you love, what about slipping the “Thank You Billy Graham” video into their stockings? As you do, you’re paying your own tribute to one of this world’s best loved human beings, perpetuating his legacy to another generation and beyond–and contributing to the needs of people in other parts of the world, in Billy’s name. Doesn’t that seem kind of right, this Christmas?

Merry Christmas, Billy Graham–and God bless you, dear friend.

National Guard Cleans Up Pot Operation in Tennessee

I just returned from a week in Tennessee, and while there heard about yet another way that the National Guard is helping America – this time by keeping drugs off of our streets.

Last week the National Guard, in conjunction with the Forest Service, rehabilitated a remote area in the Cherokee National Forest that was recently used for a large marijuana growing operation. Guardsmen from the Counterdrug Task Force assisted Forest Service agents in transporting over 800 pounds of debris from the sight via a National Guard UH 60 helicopter.

The operation began in June, when 357,500 marijuana plants were eradicated by a joint task force consisting of the Tennessee National Guard, The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Alcoholic Beverage Commission and supported by The Drug Enforcement Agency.

Other than natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes, we rarely hear about many of the great things that the National Guard does on a daily basis to keep our country and people safe. Drug dealers continue to try to exploit our youth, and the National Guard is just one of many organizations that help limit those who try to ruin our culture.

The National Guard has a 372 year history in keeping America safe both home and abroad, and this is just another example of why we all need to support these heroic American men and women.
