The Best Time of the Year

Friend, we’re smack dab in the middle of the best time of the year, that period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Somehow, most everybody gets more mellow (unless they get too uptight about gifts and shopping)—and there’s a growing feeling of good will, nostalgia and memories of Christmas past, with loved ones and happy times.

Back in North Carolina, there’s a frail but incredibly brave elder statesman in a wheel chair, trying to make the most of these precious days without his first and only wife Ruth. Yes, he has most of his children and some of his grandkids around him, and lots of tender, loving care—but none of that can replace the company of that dear life companion of over 60 years.

Still, Billy Graham soldiers on, even through the celebration of his 90th birthday, using every opportunity to praise his God and point people to Jesus. What an amazing man!

May I make a suggestion, one I hope won’t be taken wrongly by anybody? As a Christmas gift to Billy, and to families and friends you love, what about slipping the “Thank You Billy Graham” video into their stockings? As you do, you’re paying your own tribute to one of this world’s best loved human beings, perpetuating his legacy to another generation and beyond–and contributing to the needs of people in other parts of the world, in Billy’s name. Doesn’t that seem kind of right, this Christmas?

Merry Christmas, Billy Graham–and God bless you, dear friend.

Evangelist’s long life reflects commitment to God, gratitude for His blessings

DEAR DR. GRAHAM: I heard somewhere that you’ll soon be celebrating your 90th birthday. My sincere congratulations and best wishes to you for such a long life! When is it, anyway? And what are your thoughts about living so long? Do you ever wish you could just go on to heaven? — Mrs. K.R.

DEAR MRS. K.R.: Thank you for your kind greetings — and yes, by the time you read this I will have celebrated my 90th birthday (on Nov. 7).

I suppose my first thought about living so long is one of surprise! I never thought I’d live this long; when I was growing up, I can’t recall that any members of our family lived to this age. I thank God for giving me such a long and full life — and above all, my feeling is one of deep gratitude to Him for all His blessings. Often in recent days, I have recalled the Bible’s words in Lamentations 3:22-23: “His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Read more.

Thank You Billy Graham

The Bible says, “Honor those to whom honor is due.”

If there’s a human being, since the first century, who is more deserving of world-wide honor than Billy Graham, I don’t know who it is.

Yes, there have been great medical discoveries, so we honor Louis Pasteur, Jonas Salk and Madam Currie. There have been philosophical, economic and scientific discoveries that have contributed greatly to the welfare of mankind – but Billy Graham’s contributions have to do with this life, and the life we believe awaits us. We call that life eternity.

‘Live’ in front of millions and millions of people, through fifty-plus years of tireless ministry, this man has poured out his life and energies to bless men and women, their families, and their circumstances. Like Mother Theresa, he has cared for their physical well-being, but even more for their eternal destiny. Millions have heard him preach the truth of God’s love and salvation and have received it. Can anyone claim to have done more in the last 2,000 years? Billy himself is very humble and wants no accolades – but as our song says, we need to do him honor and acknowledge the miracles God can perform through a yielded man.

Like Bono, I thank God for Billy Graham.
